The Spark of Hudson: Innovating for Community Impact
At The Spark of Hudson, we’re committed to building a connected community through programs, services, and spaces that serve the people of Hudson and beyond. To achieve this, we use a unique structure that combines a nonprofit arm—The Spark of Hudson Foundation (a 501c3)—and a for-profit entity—The Spark of Hudson LLC—which operates as The Spark Building.
This approach allows us to maximize the positive impact we have on the community in a sustainable way. This model takes advantage of a tax incentive program called a Qualified Opportunity Zone (QOZ), which the City of Hudson opted into. QOZs encourage investments in underserved areas by offering tax benefits to businesses—like The Spark of Hudson LLC—that operate within these zones.
The reason our building operates as an LLC is straightforward: QOZ guidelines require businesses to be for-profit. By structuring it this way, we receive major financial benefits—such as avoiding capital gains taxes—that allow us to invest even more in the community. Any profit generated by the LLC will be donated directly to our nonprofit foundation, so every dollar goes back to funding the programs, services, and spaces that are driving positive change in Hudson
We believe this model is the future of community-oriented work. By combining a for-profit and nonprofit structure, we’re able to sustain ourselves financially while continuously growing our impact. The Spark Building generates revenue, hosts events, and creates a gathering space for the community, all while ensuring that every dollar is used to support our mission.
You can support The Spark of Hudson in several ways: by making a donation to our 501c3, renting space at The Spark Building for your next event, or volunteering your time to help us grow. Every bit of support contributes to expanding our impact and building a stronger community.
Everything we do is in service of sparking curiosity and helping residents in Hudson thrive. The nonprofit and for-profit arms work hand-in-hand, and we’re excited to continue exploring new and innovative ways to make lasting change.
